Hey there! Welcome to stylewindow and trust me if I could say “hey there!” in a billion languages and be done with this article I would.
Fortunately, it’s our duty at stylewindow to inform you and give you style tips.
I’m Kash and today I’ll give you a brief history on the grass to grace story of brogues.
Brogues? Yes, Good brogues. We all know brogues, we’ve all seen brogues, whether in person or on social media and it surely catches the eye.
The stylewindow team carried out a research, with the university of Benin, Benson Idahosa University and Igbinedion University as our focus.
We asked a total of 200 people what word comes to mind when they see a brogue shoe.
A whooping 124 of them said “classy”. 39 said “expensive”, 13 said “mature”, 14 said “old” ( not sure if good or bad) and 7 said “respect” (of course) and 3 said “holes”.
Good news for us, they’re all right, Bad news for us, they’re all right as well (I’ll go into that shortly).
However, some people uttered comments I can’t really post here, especially the females on how they feel when they see a guy on brogues .
From the result of our polls, the most glaring and unmistakable of all is the word ” CLASSY
The good part of the word classy is that it puts you on a pedestal, it defines not just character but the term classy engulfs most of the other words mentioned. Classy could do for mature ( we wouldn’t really refer to a toddler as classy, right?) Classy would definitely pose as expensive after all most celebrities that are classy pay hell to get a pair of brogues to complete a classy outfit.
Think about it, If you’re going to the Oscars what do you wear? brogues! If you’re going to the movies with the love of your life what do you wear? Brogues! If you’ve got a million dollar idea and you want the bank manager to take you seriously what do you wear? Certainly not a pair of red sneakers bro, it is brogues! Wanna feel like sir Andy Murray and sir mo Farah for a day? Wear brogues.
Let’s face it, brogues are fancy, they go with everything good, they’re classy! They’re mature, they can be affordable ( a topic for next time) and boy! they begat respect.
If a dude wearing brogues walked up to my Girl and asked for her number I’d probably say “yes sir, please she’s all yours” haha I’m kidding but it’s actually that serious.
With all these attention it’ll shock you to find out that brogues “shoes originally made of animal hide, primarily had holes in them to drain water out,” it’s so funny, but true!
This was because they were worn based on the function by “Shepherd’s” in Ireland’s swampy areas.
Brogues in its earliest days were associated with struggles, dirt, filth and any other word that comes to mind after seeing the previous ones.
Fast forward to years later, brogues now represents much more.
To me, brogues represent fashion and true style because it embodies culture, function, goals and ultimately respect and motivation.
Right now, you’re probably wondering how brogues earlier associated turned out to be this hyped, awesome and classy!
So, the next time you see a brogue and think of the word classy, please remember it didn’t start out that way.
No wonder, brogues understand us so much because it’s been on a wonderful journey itself, from being worn by the lower class to being hustled by the upper class.
Dear reader, you and I are not much different from brogues, we don’t have to be great at the onset, but with persistence, focus and hard work we will surely get there! Afterall isn’t that what we strive for?
It’s quite hurtful that I have to leave now, but I’ll leave you with this quote,
